Africa is a continent of cultures with a rich history of masks. Although Africa is a huge region, masks are worn and used in villiage ceremonies throughout the continent for different occasions. Fifth grade artists read a lot about the masks of different African tribes in class, did a webquest to do their own research, and then created a mask for their own "tribe" out of clay. They were sure to incorporate human and animal elements, elongated and exaggerated features, patterns and simple shapes- characteristics common on many real African masks...
