AIMS Conference

This past Monday, the kids had off from school and all of us from Calvert went down to the convention center for the annual AIMS conference. After a great keynote speech by education advocate and author Wes Moore, we were released to attend sessions or workshops that we had pre-registered for. My favorite of the day was the two-hour workshop I attended called "Matchbox Books," where we had the chance to get crafty and create little accordion style artworks that fit into matchboxes. It was a really simple concept, but the possibilities of what to do with it are endless, and I am TOTALLY going to do something with it this year in 7th or 8th grade art class, or maybe even a club. It was really fun!
One of the speakers examples- this is not a book, but she used the matches as the legs of her character. The "drawer" with the legs and fox/trees tucks back into the box that the person is on. So cute!
A highlight of the conference (for me anyway) is the artwork that it on display. AIMS reaches out to us art teachers in the Spring to see if we are interested in reserving space to display our students' work and we are always excited to show off what Calvert is doing! Here are a few pictures that I snapped on my cell phone camera on Sunday when I went down there to set it up. It was neat to walk around and see what the other schools are producing and to get inspiration and new ideas!
