This fact is pretty darn scary and it is due to poverty or the fact that many in Baltimore reside in "food deserts." Food deserts are areas that lack access to affordable fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lowfat milk and other foods that make up the full range of a healthy diet. Residents in these communities have limited or no access to supermarkets with fresh foods, limited or no access to transportation, and often have low household income. Unfortunately, the food that is available to people in these areas come from fast food chains and corner stores, where the food choices are processed, pre-packaged and unhealthy.
Calvert is partnering with the United Way of Central Maryland as part of the their Access to Healthy Food Initiative by holding a Fresh Food Drive THIS WEEK! The food we collect is being delivered daily to local city schools and distributed to the students there to bring home and eat with their families! This morning, I weighed in 166 pounds of fresh food in the Middle School before it went out to its destination school; how exciting!
Please continue to support the drive this week by sending fresh food in daily. Suggested items include broccoli, cauliflower, root vegetables like carrots and parsnips, sweet potatoes, apples, oranges and green beans. Thanks for your support!
