Sumi-e Workshop with Visiting Artist!

Today I arranged to have local artist/educator Joan Lok come do a workshop with my 5th grade class. She told us about the art form Sumi-e (Asian brush painting) which is the subject of our next project. Mrs. Lok showed us the strokes needed to create paintings of bamboo and cherry blossoms and we spent some time trying our hand at it, though we will spend lots more class time practicing and creating a final work on rice paper eventually.

I bought a copy of Joan's book and she did this beautiful painting of a wisteria for me on the signature page!
