Exploring Baltimore

The sixth grade participated in their spring field trip yesterday during which they explored their very own city of Baltimore. We took a bus downtown around 9:00am and started out at the Baltimore Visitor's Center where we met the Urban Rangers who took us on a guided walking tour run by the Baltimore National Heritage Area. We walked by and learned about various Baltimore landmarks. The hope is that students would become better connected to some of the less well known parts of their hometown and that they would also be exposed to ideas in advance of their 7th grade Baltimore project. The afternoon involved a picnic lunch at Camden Yards and a guided behind-the-scenes tour of the ballpark, which was a definite highlight of the day! Enjoy these photos of our trip:
In the Visitor's Center learning some Baltimore facts
Mimicking William Donald Schaefer
We got to see them setting up the tightrope (on the barge behind the kids) for this special event that occurred in the harbor last night
Hearing about the USS Constellation
In front of the new floating wetlands
Checking out the 9/11 memorial outside of the WTC, which honors the victims of the September 11th tragedy who were from MD
In the elevator on the way up to the Top of the World!
Getting to see Baltimore from a bird's eye view on the 28th floor of the Trade Center

They had the names of all of the victims of 9/11 on the window. Those that are lowered were Marylanders
Outside of the National Aquarium and two of the Baltimore Maritime Museum's vessels
At Pier 5, in front of the US Coast Guard Cutter Taney
Learning about sewage pumping at the Eastern Avenue Pumping Station- ewww!
Outside of the President Street Station, which now houses the Baltimore Civil War Museum- outside the doors of the President Street Station, the first deaths of the Civil War occurred!
Having fun inside of the Civil War Museum
Lounging and lunching at the picnic area of the ballpark
Starting our Camden Yards tour in the plaza with the Orioles retired numbers statues, Sports Legends Museum in background
We got to walk on the warning track and sit in the Orioles dugout! SO COOL!
