Multimedia Still Life

7th graders were given the opportunity to learn about and practice using several different artistic mediums in this one project. First, students did a line drawing of one of four still lifes set up in the art room. After completing their line drawings, students cut their drawing into four sections. One section was then shaded with pencil, like a traditional still life drawing. The other sections were completed using collage materials, oil pastel and watercolor. In all of the mediums, students were sure to consider value and shadow to create a realistic rendering of the still life.

  3. These are beautiful! Do you think the difficulty of this project would be beyond 4th and 5th graders?

    1. I am sure you could do a version of this at any grade level, but the results would obviously be different! Perhaps you could try just a split piece with two sections, rather than attempting four mediums?

  4. Hi, Mrs. Kamp! I plan to use this project with my co-op Middle School Art Class on Sept. 20th. I just want to be sure that I understand the instructions correctly. Your instructions given say, "After completing their line drawings, students cut their drawing into four sections." Do students literally "cut" their drawing into the four sections, or simply draw lines to distinguish four sections? AND, if literally cut into section, do students then glue the sections back together, making sure the sections meet in the proper place? AND upon what do they adhere the sections, another sheet of paper or board? Do you have a lesson plan available, which I can print and use? Thanks for your help and/or suggestions! I Googled "instructions for Calvert Middle School Multimedia Art," and was directed to this site. Thanks again! Blessings, Judy

    1. Yes, we actually cut the big paper into four sections. We used a paper cutter so the lines were crisp. I did this so that the mediums didn't smudge or run onto the wrong sections. We put them back together just by taping them on the back where they belonged. THen we mounted them on a larger piece of tagboard as a background.
I didn't write a lesson plan for this- sorry! Good luck doing it with your students!
