Split Portraits in Pencil

The first project of the year for seventh graders focused on using a range value to create a realistic rendering of a self portrait. First, students used the grid method on a photograph to create the outline of half of their head and to place their facial features in the correct spots on their drawing. The grid lines were then erased and students used assorted drawing pencils to build up the shadows and highlights on their face. At the end of the project, the two halves of their portrait were joined back together and I think they look AWESOME!

  1. Hi! I think this project looks awesome. I want to try it with my 7th graders soon. How did you rejoin the photograph and drawing in the end?

    Thanks!

    1. Nothing magical- I just put a long piece of thick masking tape on the back along the seam! These were about 14" x 20" (the photos were printed to our school's plotter)
