First Week(s) Photos

It's always a bummer when the halls lack colorful artwork in the first few weeks of school, but we are diligently working on our first projects in every grade level. I had additional pictures on my camera, but sadly, I didn't realize that my memory card was still in my laptop from my last upload, so I "lost" some my photos of my Art History kids making mini fresco paintings on plaster using egg tempera paint. Oh well... live and learn. Here are a few "in progress" pics from all of my Studio Art classes:

Seventh graders did a quick pre-drawing self portrait using a mirror- a daunting task:
I then took their photos using a bright light source on one side in order to create a nice range of values, converted the pics to black and white, and printed copies for the kids:
They are now using the grid method to create the contour outlines of their portraits, before erasing the grid lines and shading their faces:

Fifth graders are starting the year with a printmaking project. We talked about how to draw realistic trees and branches, and each girl came up with a design that we traced onto 6"x12" rubber material before carving away the negative space and printing them. Here is my example in progress and the girls carving step 2- the leaves:

Sixth Graders are working on the classic Calvert painted portraits with tessellation backgrounds. I only have this one photo from very early in the process, when this student was tracing her unique tessellation shape onto her background paper:

Eighth graders are working on a "self portrait" of another kind- one that incorporates their fingerprint, handwriting and text about them. I am excited to see the results!
