Positive-Negative Cut Paper
Giving Exacto knives to 7th graders.... Am I crazy or what?! This project is about balance, positive/negative space and craftsmanship. Students were given the challenge of coming up with a theme around which they could design 7-10 fairly simple, symmetrical graphics. They cut half of each graphic from the side of an 8" black square and the positive shapes were flipped over the edge. See if you can figure out the theme of each one!

I love how strong these look, they are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs Kamp,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Amiria Robinson. I am in the process of preparing some free art lessons for substitute teachers which will be shared by my website (www.studentartguide.com) and am very much hoping to include a lesson based upon the awesome images above. I was hoping to include the 3rd and 4th image, credited with student names, as well as your name and your school name, with a link to your website. Please let me know if you would be happy for me to do this (I can be contacted via email: amiria [at] studentartguide.com).
Looking forward to hearing from you! :)

This is excellent. It takes the pos-neg concept to a whole new level. Fabulous work.
ReplyDeleteAs the slow kid in class. I found the description of the process a little vague: "They cut half of each graphic from the side of an 8" black square and the positive shapes were flipped over the edge." Would like to better understand what was done with more than a sentence.
ReplyDeletehi. Every student was given one 8" square of black paper and an Exacto and that's it. To keep the explanation simple, if you wanted a heart shape, you would cut half of a heart out from one of the edges, remove the piece you just cut and flip it to the "outside" of the black square. Visually you'd have a whole heart- the empty negative half inside the original black square and the positive paper half on the outside. I really don't know how else to explain it?!
DeleteI wrote these posts to show parents what their kids were doing in class- sorry my description wasn't up to snuff for you
Excellent work!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
